The Hitchin Darts League has been a cornerstone of local grassroots sport for over 60 years. What started as a sprawling, multi-divisional powerhouse has evolved into a tight-knit, passionate community that keeps the competitive spirit of darts alive across North Hertfordshire and its surrounding borders.

🎯 A Look Back: The Golden Era

During the 1960s, the league was an absolute juggernaut. It boasted 3 thriving divisions, each packed with 14 teams. While the league was anchored heavily in Hitchin, the oche action spread far and wide, pulling in teams from neighboring towns and outlying villages including:

• Letchworth & Baldock

• Arlesey & Stotfold

• Ickleford, Holwell, & Pirton

• Shillington & Henlow

• Little Wymondley, Great Wymondley, Whitwell, & Graveley

• ...and even a few squads making the trip from Stevenage!

As the landscape of the classic British pub shifted over the decades, many historic venues sadly closed their doors, leading to a steady decline in team numbers. By the 2019/20 season, the league had consolidated to 13 teams, dropping down to a resilient core of 6 teams for the post-pandemic 2021/22 season. However, the passion never wavered, and the league continues to forge ahead with a dedicated lineup of local venues.

🤝 The Stalwarts Behind the League

A league doesn’t survive for six decades without tireless work behind the scenes. We owe an immense debt of gratitude to the dedicated committee members who steered the ship across generations:

• The 1960s & 70s: Formed and anchored by the efforts of Ron Abbiss, Dom McKenna, and John Green.

• The 1980s to 2010s: Championed by long-serving legends Ted Ding and Brian Cobley.

• The Modern Transition: Kept alive and kicking by Colin Dunn, who lent his invaluable dedication to the committee from 2003 until his well-earned retirement in 2024.

• The New Generation: The future of the league is in safe hands. We welcomed Wayne McGrory and Darren McGrory to the committee in 2022, followed by Claire Kitchener and Michelle Bull in 2024 to drive the league forward into its next chapter.

🏆 The Grandest Stages & Iconic Guests

Finals Nights have always been the crown jewel of our calendar, consistently drawing packed houses and electric atmospheres. Over the years, our signature night has moved across iconic local landmarks:

• Hitchin Town Hall & The Hermitage Halls (The early foundation)

• Club 85 (Hosting years of memorable clashes)

• Arlesey Town FC (A special road-trip host in 2010)

• Hitchin Town Canary Club (Our proud home for Finals Nights since 2007)

These nights haven't just showcased local talent—they’ve brought the absolute elite of world darts straight to Hitchin. The legendary guest exhibition players to grace our stage include Eric Bristow, John Lowe, Jamie Harvey, Peter Manley, Keith Dellar, Steve Beaton, Dennis Priestley, Colin Lloyd, Dennis Ovens, and Tony O’Shea (in 2014). We also proudly welcomed our first female guest star, the fantastic Lorraine Winstanley, who wowed the crowd in 2019.
