A brief background of the Hitchin Dart League
The Hitchin Dart League has been going for over 60 years, and back in the 60’s it consisted of 3 Divisions, each of 14 teams!
Teams were based mainly in Hitchin, but also in Letchworth, Baldock, Arlesey, Stotfold, Ickleford and out-lying villages such as Holwell, Pirton, Shillington, Henlow, Little & Great Wymondley, Whitwell, Graveley …and even one or two from Stevenage.
Many of the pubs no longer exist, and gradually, over recent years numbers have fallen steadily….to just 13 in 2019/20, and only 6 for 2021/22!
Stalwarts on the Committee have included Ron Abbiss, Dom McKenna & John Green during the 60’s & 70’s and then Ted Ding & Brian Cobley from the 80’s and into the 2010’s (with Colin Dunn involved since 2003!)
Finals Nights have always been well-attended.
These were held at Hitchin Town Hall & then Hermitage Halls for many years, and then moved on to Club 85’, until moving to Hitchin Town Canary Club in 2007 – with one being held at Arlesey Town FC in 2010.
Guest players have included many of the top players in the game….Eric Bristow, John Lowe, Jamie Harvey, Peter Manley, Keith Dellar, Steve Beaton, Dennis Priestley, Colin Lloyd, Dennis Ovens, Tony O’Shea (in 2014), and not forgetting the one female guest, Lorraine Winstanley in 2019.
